Texture and simple form that brings out the best of the material

The process of making “shikki” - Japanese lacquerware using the sap of urushi trees – is usually divided mainly into making wooden basis by people called “kijishi (wood turner)” and painting that wooden basis with urushi sap (normally say just “urushi”) by “nushi (painter)”. TAKATA, Haruyuki is basically the former, though he likes to paint urushi too.
After graduation from Musashino Art University, Haruyuki learned the basics of making shikki at Wajima Urushi Art Training Institute in Ishikawa prefecture followed by becoming a disciple of a woodturner making wood basis of cups and bowls. His apprenticeship there had continued four years until he became independent.
He has been absorbed in pursuing ideal forms, which enable to co-exist beauty and user-friendliness. The simple form with the texture that makes the most of the natural taste of the material fits a contemporary lifestyle.

These wooden bowls are made of ginkgo trees with lacquer finish. The Ginkgo Bowl "Tetsu-bachi" (iron bowl), which is tapered toward the bottom, and “the Ginkgo Bowl "Maru" (round bowl) (right).

Careful finish of the details including the back of the bottom. Beautiful gloss and visible grain are rendered by the technique called “fuki-urushi (wiped-lacquer finish)”.

Haruyuki takes care to make “warm” wares, which take advantage of the texture of the material and make people feel beautiful features of wood and urushi.
He is always struggling to materialize forms where beauty and user-friendliness co-exist.
With such backdrop, his works reflect his sincere commitment to making lacquerware.
