HANDA Atsushi, ceramic artist, describes his style of making porcelain as “Drawing pictures in a kiln.”
The main component of the glaze is cobalt and it, fired by high temperature in a kiln, gives “yuragi (wavering gradation)” to the pattern on the ceramicware.
Yuragi does not happen to any colors other than indigo blue. Atsushi always respects the feelings of his predecessors who established standard patterns still existing today. Given yuragi, traditional blue-and-white porcelain have taken in contemporary feeling.
These palm-sized teacups are made exclusively for WISE-WISE tools. Good for both guests and home use.

Impressive yuragi comes from the feature of the indigo blue pigment, which remains raw until using it to color the surface of porcelain, and from Atsushi’s unique calcination techniques.
Red and yellow pigments are already fired in advance so that they do not show yuragi when they are fired again in the process of making porcelain.

This is “dami-shibori” pattern, which looks like flowers to bloom. In fact, it was originally a traditional “Shippo (Seven Treasures / cloisonné)” pattern and it has been given yuragi with firing in high temperature.
Yuragi shows a new style of gradation and gives us a fresh surprise.

This is “kotsu-shiboride” pattern named after a sketching technique of traditional Japanese painting. Blue thin lines cover the surface.

Atsushi combines natural materials with his unique techniques to create a new sense of beauty.
Sometsuke (blue and white) porcelain has been favored by many people since ancient times. It matches early autumn when summer-heat is still lingering.
Enjoy Atsushi’s world of blue.
